Okay, loves. So here is my first fanfiction on livejournal. I hope you all enjoy. Criticism is very, very welcome. I haven't written a fanfiction in awhile and I need to get back on track!!!

Resolution

Hermione looked at herself in the mirror. Her warm brown eyes took in the reflection, and she decided that maybe she didn’t look half bad.

“Let’s go, ‘Mione!”, she heard Ginny Weasley call from the sitting room. “I know we want to be fashionably late, but I think we might be cutting it close!”

Hermione looked over her shoulder towards the doorway that led out of her bathroom and into her bedroom. She whipped her head back towards the mirror. She had been thinking about everything that had taken place over the past couple of years.

It was her seventh year when everything really changed. The war was in full swing. With Dumbledore gone, everyone’s morale was pretty low, and sinking with each passing day. She had needed someone. Everyone needed someone. She thought long and hard, and considered Ron, but Hermione knew that she would only be using him. She wasn’t in love with him. Hermione took refuge in her friends and her studies. She became the best witch she could be and was a great asset in the war. Yet, the whole time, she thought of one person. She thought of the one man she could see herself with.

Eventually, good triumphed over evil. Hermione moved on to work at the Ministry of Magic, in a very important position in Muggle Relations. She had never found that someone. She buried herself in her work. She lived for her work and her friends. Harry, Ron and Ginny were the only ones who could pull her out of her shell. She even spent the holidays with them.

And tonight, well, tonight was New Year’s Eve. It was night Hermione usually spent on her couch with takeout and a good movie. As midnight came and went, she would make a resolution. For the past couple of years, her resolution had always been the same. Hermione would sit and tell herself that in the upcoming year, she would find happiness. She would stop at nothing to find something, anything, that would take the routine out of her life. Yet, she always got caught up in something else and never found what she was looking for.

Hermione had been all too ready to pick up the phone and dial the number of her favorite Chinese restaurant, sitting in her sweatpants and oversized tee-shirt, when she had heard the buzz of the bell to her flat. She got up and pressed the button on her intercom. “Hello?”, she had said, wonder who in the world would be coming to see her at six o’clock on New Year’s Eve.

“Hermione. Let me in.”, came Ginny’s voice in reply.

Hermione buzzed her up and within ten minutes, Ginny, dressed in a beautiful dark blue dress and her long, red hair flowing down her back, was coming through the door of Hermione’s fifth floor flat. She looked her up and down, and then said, with a tone of finality, “Hermione, we are going out. I will not let you sit here one more night. We’re going the Ministry’s New Year’s Eve party.”

“Ginny, I-“, Hermione started to protest.

“No, Hermione.”, Ginny had cut her off. “You will march yourself right into that bathroom, put on that gorgeous dress you bought two weeks ago, and let me do your hair and makeup. You should be able to do it yourself by now, but if you’re going to sulk and act like you’re still 15, then so will I.”

With that she guided Hermione into the bathroom and spent the next hour and a half working her magic. When Ginny was finished, she had left Hermione to herself for a few minutes so that she could do whatever she needed before leaving.

Now she was calling for Hermione to hurry up. It was nearly 8:30.

Hermione looked at herself in the knee-length black dress that fit her like a glove. She was anxious. Before turning around to walk out the bathroom, Hermione looked into her own eyes in the mirror and thought, “This year, Hermione, no resolutions. You won’t be disappointed if there is nothing to be disappointed in.”

Hermione joined Ginny in the sitting room, and the two girls apparated to the Leaky Cauldron, where this year’s celebration was being held. With the war still dying down, the Ministry of Magic had decided to hold the party in a familiar setting.

The Leaky Cauldron was barely recognizable. It had been cleaned to perfection. Little lights were twinkling everywhere, and the Weird Sisters played on a stage in the back of the large room. There were couples dancing to the music, and other guests mingling, talking and laughing.

Hermione and Ginny were greeted by Harry and Ron, who worked in the Ministry as Aurors. Ginny now worked in the Department of Mysteries. Harry pulled Ginny in for a kiss. Hermione smiled to herself. It was their first New Year’s Eve together as a married couple and she was absolutely thrilled for them. They deserved that happiness. Harry and Ginny moved towards the dance floor, while Hermione and Ron chatted with each other and some co-workers who had joined them.

Hermione excused herself from the group and walked towards the bar to get a glass of champagne. As she walked towards the bar, she saw a group of men standing in a far corner laughing heartily. She watched them as she walked, and one of the men looked up. Their eyes met and Hermione drew a sharp intake of breath.

Viktor Krum’s dark eyes gazed into her own. “Of course he’s here, Hermione.”, she thought to herself. “He’s Viktor Krum, for God’s sake!”

Hermione was frozen on the spot as he made his way towards her. She had seen him a few times during the war, but only for a few moments at a time. Her heart raced as he moved closer.

“Herm-my-nee?”, Viktor said.

“Viktor! How are you?”, Hermione asked as she faked comfort.

Viktor pull her into a hug. Hermione could feel the warmth that radiated from his solid body. He released her after a few moments and answered, “I am fine. How haff you been?”

Hermione considered being truthful, but decided against it. “I’ve been great! Just busy, you know? Work and all.”, she replied.

Viktor studied her face. Hermione was almost positive he could tell she was lying, but if he suspected anything, he let it go.

“That is vonderful.”, he said. “I am very happy for you. Vill you stay and talk vith me for a little vhile? Or do you need to be somevhere? Vith someone?”

“Of course I’ll stay and chat, Viktor. We haven’t seen each other in so long. I’d like to catch up.”, Hermione told him. “How has Quidditch been? I read about you all the time in the Daily Prophet.”

Viktor chuckled. “Is that such a good thing? I think I might prefer not being in that newspaper. Quidditch has been good. Ve von the Vorld Cup last year.”

“So I heard. Congratulations!”

“Thank you. Tell me about vhat you haff been doing these past years. Is there someone special in your life? Harry Potter? Or that Veasley?”, Viktor asked as he began to scowl.

“Harry is actually married now. And as for me, no. I’ve been too busy, really.”

Viktor’s face softened, and he looked concerned. “Vhy, Herm-my-nee? I do not understand. How can you be too busy for romance? Surely there haff been offers. You are too beautiful for there not to haff been.”

Hermione blushed. “No. There haven’t been any ‘offers’.” She looked away. If only he knew that she had stayed away from romance all these years because she was waiting for him.

Viktor reached out and cupped her cheek, turning her face back towards him. He looked into her eyes, and Hermione felt as if he was peering into her soul. “Vhat if there vas an offer now?”, he asked.

Hermione couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Wha-what?”, she stammered. She forced herself not to sound hopeful.

Viktor lowered his voice to a mere whisper. “I can still read you. I can see that you are lying to me. Vhy? Vhat do you have to hide from me? I know you aren’t happy. You look so lonely. Herm-my-nee, all those times I saw you, I vanted nothing more than to stop and just be in your company. Effer since the tournament at Hogvarts, I haff loffed you. Yet, since those days, vhen ve vere so young, my feelings haff grown. Life vithout you has been unbearable.”

Hermione felt tears coming to her eyes, but she fought to keep them back.

“Vhen I saw you tonight,”, Viktor continued, “I felt whole again. It was like my heart had not been beating, like my heart had never beaten before, and all of a sudden, it started. Something had been missing for so long, but it is back again. Please, I am begging you, Herm-my-nee, do not take it away from me.”

Hermione couldn’t hold back any longer. She slowly closed her eyes and felt tears run down her cheeks. She felt Viktor’s rough fingers brush the tears away. She knew her knees might give out if he kept his hand on her skin for much longer. Suddenly, her eyes flicked open as she felt his warm, soft lips upon hers. She closed them again as she melted into his kiss. He was gentle and tender, supporting her with a hand at the small of her back and the other at the back of her head. Viktor held her as if she was fragile, as if she might break and he was terrified that she would.

Hermione thanked God that he was holding her up, because without his hands, she wouldn’t be able to stay upright. She finally reached her arms up and linked them around his neck. She returned the kiss and Viktor tightened his arms around her.

They finally pulled apart. As Hermione breathed deeply, she gazed up into his amazing eyes once again. She felt his arms around her and knew she was safe. She ran her hands down his arms and could feel his muscles beneath his soft sweater.

In the background, she could hear the guests counting down. “Ten, nine, eight, seven….”

Hermione wasn’t really listening. Viktor leaned down to kiss her again. He intensified the kiss this time. He prated his lips slightly as he kissed her, and Hermione did the same, giving him permission. As he slipped his tongue into her mouth, she could hear cheers erupt around her as the New Year rolled in. The kiss grew passionate, and her hands began to roam up and down his arms.

They broke apart and Hermione leaned her head against Viktor’s strong chest.

“I loff you, Herm-my-nee.”, he said her. “I vill alvays loff you.”

Hermione smiled and whispered, “I love you, too, Viktor.”, just loud enough for him to hear. And she meant it.

Viktor released his arms from around her and took her small hand in his own. He laced his fingers with hers and smiled down at her. He began to lead her out of the pub, through the crowd of cheering witches and wizards.

As Hermione followed him she couldn’t help but silently laugh to herself about the irony of the whole situation. She knew she would finally keep her resolution, for this year, and for the rest of her life.
